Week 6: Nostalgia

Bar Tuesday came a few days early this week due to the upcoming holiday, and we learned that Sunday night + karaoke = a crowded bar that isn’t really filled with the regulars that come on the off nights during the week. We live for those dive bar regulars, but we still had fun. There were a bunch of people there for the karaoke (23 singers!) and a lot of them used to frequent a now-defunct karaoke bar that Paul used to go to, so he had a ball seeing his old friends. There’s Kenny, aka “Sway” who has been around for years - Lucy and I remember him from a bar we used to go to ten years ago. He still looks the same – he never takes off his sunglasses and he sings crooner songs and dances the night away. In short, he rules. Sadly, it was too dark in there for the video footage I got to show up, so I’m quite sad about that. I did manage to get a little bit of video of Paul and I singing – you can see him, but the clip of me is quite dark. I included a clip of him working the crowd at the end. I love Paul:
I’m not generally a fan of having to actually get up on a stage to sing karaoke when I go out (unless it’s Dimples), and Nostalgia had quite a large one that you had to go stand on to sing:

The rest of the place was pretty unremarkable in terms of standing out for a Bar Tuesday venue. I think it would have been a lot better on a slow night. Plus, we were denied the chance of trying the advertised “Blue Viagra” drink as the bartender on duty didn’t know how to make it. Boo! Paul wanted that Blue Viagra! There was a small VIP section in the corner near the pool table with a black leather couch and loveseat, but we had too many people with us last night, so we opted for just pulling up some tables to extend the wooden banquettes:

Wait, did I say unremarkable? I forgot about the possible blood splatters on the wall:

And the bathrooms were interesting. The ladies room was like a cave – it only had 2 lights so one of the stalls was almost completely dark. The other regular stall was okay, but then there was the “Honeymoon Suite” handicapped stall that was gigantic. It even had its own counter with flowers on it next to the sink. Too bad it had no soap and the light on the wall didn’t work. And really, what is up with these bars with no soap in the bathroom? That’s gross. The main sink had a soap dispenser, but I had to press it about eighteen times to get a pin-sized drop of soap out. I heard that the men’s room had the floor-to-ceiling urinals complete with beer bottles at the bottom of them. Nice.
Jukebox report: They had one, but we didn’t get to play it because of the karaoke. But it was all CDs, with the widest selection I’ve seen on a non-digital one so far. Everything from Patsy Cline to Gretchen Wilson to Nirvana to Reggae Superstars. It also included Journey’s Greatest Hits, which is notable because Don’t Stop Believing has sort of turned out to be our unofficial Bar Tuesday theme song, having heard it 4 times in the last 3 outings.
Golden Tee Count: 4 out of 6. Nostalgia had a hybrid Golden Tee/bowling game. Sweet!
Next time: We’re having an unofficial stop on Thursday this week to a bar that we didn’t know about when the list was made. Then we’re back to Tuesdays next week. Whee!
Quote of the Night: Courtesy of Michael: "Pam, your boobs look amazing tonight. If I were straight, I'd be all over those." I love Michael.
