Week Twelve: The Village Corner Tavern

David was all about attending the pork loin event on the 19th. There was going to be an open keg!
Initially we were a little worried about this week’s bar, as multiple people and parents told us that we shouldn’t go there because it is always in the police log and doesn’t have the best of reputations. However, Paul had been there once before and survived, so we braved it. Besides, I know the owner’s nephew and he showed up at the beginning to hang for a few and establish that we were with him so no one would bother us. (He’s very notorious in our city.) So it was all good. And I’ve got to say, most of us were disappointed when we went inside, because it was pretty nice. I was expecting something small and dark and musty, but it was clean and light in there. There was even a little kitchenette area on one wall behind the bar complete with cabinets and fridge with magnets on it. It was kind of strange, just like the TV stand that had a collection of about 4 crockpots on its shelves. You can see one in this picture:

Oh, did I forget to mention that the best part of the whole thing was that 3 of the TVs were tuned to The Dukes of Hazzard? Now that is something I can get behind. Awesome. After the adventures of the Duke boys had ended, Michael somehow convinced the bartender to change the TV near us over to Big Brother:
I’m surprised that we didn’t get any flak for that, but there were enough other TVs in the place to cover the rest of the patrons. Speaking of which, the place was packed. It wasn’t a big bar, but it was full, which is something we’re not used to on Bar Tuesdays. There were 11 of us last night, and we only ended up with about 6 stools to share between us. We’re used to taking over places! When Paul went before, he went on a Saturday night and said the place was dead. Not last night – it was brimming with folks. The clientele was kind of a rough bunch, but we didn’t feel unwelcome and they were fine with us. Randy was actually a little sad that he never feared for his life once. Even after a guy who was outside with 4 of the boys turned to them and asked, “So, yous guys gay, or what?” HA! David replied that some were and some weren’t and that he wasn’t sure if the gay ones were the lucky or the unlucky few. The guy didn’t say anything more and no one said anything the rest of the night, so at least they were at least gay-okay on the gay-friendly scale. And why on earth would they ever think that in the first place?

Oh, right.
But hey, it was Randy’s last Bar Tuesday [sniff!] before he goes back to Louisiana for good on Saturday. We’re hitting a bonus bar for him tonight, so stay tuned for that. Lucky for us, last night’s bar was kind of boring, so we didn’t have to worry about recovering before tonight. That’s also why Randy is in almost all of the pictures from last night – we’re going to miss him! I’ll miss his Blue Steel:

Or maybe he just won’t make it home since David looks like he might kill someone in this picture:

In terms of the rest of the place, like I said before, it was pretty boring. There were too many people to try to really interact with the locals (especially when one guy introduced himself to one of Paul’s friends in the bathroom and then asked him if he felt weird peeing in front of another guy. Ooookay then.), but they were open to it as some of us played pool with a few of the folks there. Lots of food for sale, including Slim Jims, microwave popcorn (so THAT explains the kitchenette!) and chips, but none of us indulged last night. My favorite feature of the bar was the payphone right inside the door that I later realized was the actual telephone for the bar itself. I love that. Frito’s favorite feature was the K-Fed looking patron who was sipping White Zinfandel all night.
Overall review – low key and a little boring, but great for people watching.
Golden Tee Count: 6 out of 12 – what is happening to the Tees, people? This place had a bowling game instead.
Jukebox Report: Old-school large jukebox full of classic rock, more classic rock, a little bit of newer rock, Irish drinking songs, and one Celine Dion CD (?). It did have Journey, so we got to play the Official Bar Tuesday theme song. One table also really liked my selection of What It Takes by Aerosmith, singing along at the top of their lungs when it started up.
Lingering Question: Just what is the deal with those crock pots?
Next week: A basement bar. Tonight: Bonus bar out in the sticks. Pray for a meat raffle tonight.
