Bar Tuesdays: Season Two, Week One

Season 2 – Week One: E&O Tap

Hello kiddies and welcome to Season Two of Bar Tuesdays! We’re back with a whole new list of bars that will expand our tour statewide. We may not have a Bar Tuesday every week due to fall schedules, but we’re going to try to do them as often as we can. (We have come up with the rule that both Paul and I must be present at every Bar Tuesday or else it’s not a true one. I like that rule.)

Anyhoo – let’s get started, shall we?

E&O Tap, baby. First, let me just say that I let my alter-ego of Rita Skeeter down last night as I forgot to take a picture of the outside of the bar. As Troy Bolton would say, I’ve gotta get my head in the game (and not be afraid to shoot the outside J). Just picture a small, unassuming brick building that is smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood. There is no sign, and the only way you know it’s a bar or even open is the Sam Adams light in the window. It’s actually probably the smallest bar that we’ve been to so far, but it’s a nice little hideaway. Frito summd it up best when he said, “This is like a Bar Tuesday place that people have found about.” And it’s true – it was mostly people our age just stopping in for a drink or two and hanging out.

But lest you think that the place does not have its awesome quirks, let me direct you to the pictures of Elvis on the wall:

There’s also another one above the toilet in the women’s bathroom (along with the “We can do it!” picture of Rosie the Riveter). None in the men’s room, but according to Paul, there is a sign in there that says, “Cows may come and cows may go, but the bull in this place is forever.”

I had been to the bar once before during the summer, so I was looking forward to going back and getting a chance to sit in one of the two awesome hand chairs that they have:

Michael is working that chair. You pretty much need a small ass to fit in it comfortably. Or, you can just straddle it:

We had a smaller crew last night with only 7 of us, but it was a nice and laid-back start to the new season. We also had a Bar Tuesday virgin among us, as Brent made his first Bar Tuesday appearance:

And lucky him, he got to be privy to conversations about people shitting themselves and women who think that they pee out of their vaginas. Frito actually had to draw a diagram for two women that he works with because they didn’t believe that they had urethras and more than one hole there. One of those women is in her 40s, too. Is this something people really don’t know? I ran into the same issue a few weeks ago with someone I work with. I had just been to the urologist and was talking about having a catheter stuck up into my bladder and she started comparing it to some scoping she had before she had her kids and how they had to get near the uterus, and I was just sort of, “Um…no. Different entryway, lady.” I can understand that some guys may not know this, but women? Really??

So yes, Brent was treated to some of the classy discussions that we have. That’s what makes Bar Tuesday fun! Well, that and discovering that the bar you’re at has a church pulpit set up randomly in the corner:

Awesome. First the church pews at Ye Olde Boulevard, and now the pulpit – is this a new trend that I don’t know about? And speaking of awesomeness, the bar also had a pull-down movie screen on one wall where they were projecting DVDs. I couldn’t figure out what the first movie was, but I knew the second one right away when I saw Michael Beck strolling down the street. Sadly, it wasn’t Michael Beck in Xanadu, but rather in The Warriors, a movie I am sad to report that I have never seen. But judging by the jazzy ensembles that I saw one gang sporting, I believe that I will have to watch it now. It was funny to watch some of the guys at the bar turned right around in their chairs, mesmerized by it. It reminded me of us a few weeks ago after some bar trivia (which we won by 22 points – you can’t touch team “Bet On Us”) when the bar started showing the video for Everybody by the Backstreet Boys on the big screen and all 6 of us just stopped what we were doing or saying and just sat there transixed by it. Seriously, that video still rules. Check it out on YouTube if you don’t believe me. But I must say, I do love the bars that show movies on the TVs, even if you can’t hear them. The greatest ones I’ve ever seen being shown were Better Off Dead (which is my all-time favorite movie) and Clash of the Titans, which had Lucy and I engrossed for much of the evening.

Back to business! Sorry, I seem to be Tangent Girl today. New Season, slightly new features for the Bar Tuesday reports – instead of the Golden Tee Count, we’re going to have a Video Game Report: E&O had a Lord of the Rings pinball machine as well as a Galaga/Ms. Pac Man combo machine that occupied many of us throughout the night:

We’re going to keep the Jukebox Report, but last night was the first Bar Tuesday that we’ve had where there was not a jukebox. The bar played music all night, but it was not through a jukebox, and as I found out through a sign in the bathroom, the music is controlled/chosen by each night’s bartender. I was less concerned with the music last night as I was more concerned with ogling a guy at the bar. He wasn’t there very long, so I didn’t get my chance to go stand next to him when we were ready for another round, but I did have my “Why is Pam allowed out in public?” moment of the night when he was walking by in his way out and I just pulled on his jacket sleeve to stop him and announced, “You’re cute.” Luckily, he was quite flattered by it and didn’t look at me like a crazy person. Man, I hope we’re not going to have to keep a “Pam Making an Ass Out of Herself” count now – that would be a weekly event. But hey, that’s how I roll. And seriously, the guy was hot. Damn his leaving early! Didn’t he want to finish watching The Warriors or listen to a sermon from the pulpit?

Final report: A great, low-key place to just chill. Well, and sit in hand chairs. It always comes down to the hand chairs with me.
