Bar Tuesdays: Season 2, Week 3

Week 3: Pontiac Tap

Aww yeah:

Paul and I knew we were in a good place when we saw this sign in the window:

On our way in, we were intrigued by the shady "Spa" next door:

Do people really see that place and think of luxury? Because when I see it, all I think of is "infection."

Anyway, Paul and I got to the bar first and immediately found ourselves overwhelmed by all of the...STUFF hanging up in this place. It's like Kitsch Mountain or something. It looked like someone closed 3 bars and just brought everything there and threw it on the wall. And really, the place was TINY. No room for a pool table at all. There were two small random card tables in the back, but other than that, just a bar and tiny little gross bathrooms. However, the bar did have a sign up that boasted about being the home of the world's longest penny bar:

Paul: "We should just carry the bar to Coinstar - what do you think we'll get, $5?"

We were actually quite honored to be drinking off of such an esteemed bar until the bartender delivered the sad news that they no longer house the longest penny bar - Vegas has it now. Still - we drank off of the SECOND longest penny bar, so I was still happy about that. What I wasn't so happy about was picking up my purse off the foot ledge on the bar to put in my lap so I could get something out of it and then findind my lap just covered in sand and dirt from the bottom of my purse. Ew. But I didn't expect anything less from the bar - it was just a small neighborhood pub and it was dark and dive-y, the way they usually are.

One of the main negative factors about the bar was the lack of music. There was no jukebox (what is WITH the places not having jukeboxes lately??!) and no other source of music at all. Outside of our conversation, the only sound came from the two TVs, one of which was tuned to a hockey game and the other awesomely and randomly tuned to CSI. The bartender was quite enthralled by that for a little while. Then he started to get into the Bar Tuesday folk, as we ended up with a crew of 13 people this week. There were only 3 other regulars in the bar, so we ended up being the main attraction. The bartender even got to mix up his signature shot for a few of us. We originally thought he said the name of it was the "Busted Alcoholic," which Frito and I immediately declared to be the greatest name ever, but it actually turned out to be called the "Boston Alcoholic." Not even half as fun! The shot was an original creation by the bartender himself, and it was a mixture of Jameson, blackberry brandy and Cuervo. Yikes. I'm not a shot girl myself, so I just enjoyed watching 3 of the others down those things. They even did a seond round of them a few minutes later. Paul and I were hoping that 3 more people ordered shots, because we only noticed 8 shot glasses lined up on towels behind the bar. Next to one of the lines of glasses was a stack of Dixie cups, which we desperately hoped were used as shot glasses when the other ones were used up. Our wish probably would have come true if another round was ordered, because earlier in the night when Frito arrived, he ordered a draft beer, but was told that he could only have bottled beer because all of the glasses were already in use and the bartender didn't have any more. At that time, I think there were 8 glasses on the bar. EIGHT glasses. That is insane, yet also mind-blowingly awesome in a way. Eight glasses at a bar? I have more than that in my dishwasher right now.

Here we are, taunting and laughing at Frito with our glasses:

And here's David looking like the neighborhood tough with his new buzz cut:

I tried to get some pictures that would capture how small the place was, but it's kind of hard to get across in a photo. In any case, here's a pretty good one:

That was it - that neon New England Patriots Bud Light sign is on the back wall. Right behing Lucy on the left is the side wall. You can see it more in this picture of Lucy and Tommy:

Right behind them in both shots is Michael, glued to the touchscreen video game all night. 'Megatouch' is it? Something like that. It was an older version, but hey - at least it's something for our Video Game Report.

This week also marked the final Bar Tuesday for our friend Dan, who moves back home to Pennsylvania this weekend. We'll miss your smiling face, Dan!

All I know is that he'd better start a local chapter back home! But hey, at least he got to be there for the night that we had conversations about "Poo Dollars" and ratemypoo.com. (Our classiness really knows no bounds.) Dan was also lucky to be one of the people that the bartender gave a weapons show to. First, he pulled out this giant missile head and was showing it off. The shell and casing was situated in another part of the bar. Then he brought over a (thankfully non-working, non-live) grenade. I was just waiting for the nunchucks. But really, what kind of a bar decorates with those sorts of things? Actually, this one does as we also noticed a gas mask, a whip, and numerous swords amongst the many, MANY decorations. Here are smaller pictures that don't really show things off as well:

I posted larger versions with some of our favorite items highlighted here.

So much to take in!!! There was actually more stuff scattered around the bar, but there was no way I could get it all - you get the picture, though. All in all, it was a fun night, but it would have been even better if we had some tunes going. Next time there had better be a jukebox, or Paul and I might explode.
