Years ago, John Waters came out with a book called Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters, and it was exactly what it says - each chapter was devoted to one of his many obsessions. It was awesome, and I totally relate. Anyone who knows me or has read my stuff over the years should know by now that I get obsessed with many, many things, with quite a few of them being quite random (remember Blindy?!). And things have not changed since I've been off the blogging radar. It only gave me extra time to find more things to obsess over. Obviously, I couldn't write an entry devoted to all of my obsessions, because I don't have 12 days, so I figured I would highlight some every now and then in a new segment. My main life-ruler these days would be too boring to write about, because it would simply be two words: ANGRY BIRDS, so I chose my other one. (Although on a side note, the new Angry Birds Rio update came out today. That download is NOT moving fast enough!!!!)
People - I am a Karl Pilkington addict.
For those who don't know of Karl, he is a British fellow with a head like a f*cking orange. He came into my life on April 1st when I watched a marathon of An Idiot Abroad on The Science Channel based on hearing about it in a nerdist podcast. It...was amazing. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (call me!) used to work with Karl years ago and became fascinated by him, and rightly so. They started doing podcasts with him so everyone could get a taste of Karl's unique thoughts and takes on life and it all just went from there. Ricky Gervais calls Karl his greatest contribution to the world, and I think he is right.
Anyway, so the concept of An Idiot Abroad is that Ricky and Steve (seriously, call me you hot beanpole) send Karl to see the Wonders of the World because they feel that he needs to broaden his mind. Also, because Karl hates everything and they want to see how he feels about the wonders. Karl is easily unimpressed, but surely, he can't find fault with the wonders. (Spoiler Alert: Yes, yes he can. And hilariously.) However, when Karl arrives in all of these foreign lands, he spends the first few days engaging in all kinds of activities and side trips that Ricky and Steve secretly set up that are sure to annoy him. I watched all of the episodes in 2 days and was obsessed immediately. China was the first episode that I watched, and here's the scene that sold me on the whole series right away:
After An Idiot Abroad was over, I was hungry for more Karl, so I put The Ricky Gervais Show straight at the top of my Netflix queue. This is the HBO series that animates the podcasts with Ricky, Stephen and Karl. 15 minutes in? Even MORE obsessed. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when Ricky Gervais is screaming with laughter over something Karl says. And don't even get me started on how cute the little round-headed animated Karl is:
Obviously, I tore through those DVDs on a few days and then I felt sad because it was like when I used to read the new Harry Potter book in one day and then regret doing it so quickly because I was looking forward to all of it and then it was over too fast. PACING, PAM. So I learned my lesson when I downloaded every podcast with Ricky, Steve and Karl that I could find. I was too quick with the first 5, but now I've been spacing them out like little treats. So good. So obsessed. And now, as a result of all of this, clearly I need to date Stephen Merchant. A funny and cute nerd WITH A BRITISH ACCENT? My God. I almost fainted just writing that.
But still, Karl remains my obsession. Since I don't have HBO, I'm going to have to wait ages for season 2 of The Ricky Gervais Show to come out on DVD, but there are still some Karl books I haven't read. And I was very excited to learn yesterday that An Idiot Abroad will be airing again on the Science Channel (formerly Discovery Science) starting on June 18th, so I'll just have to soothe myself with that in the meantime. That, and counting down the days until this:
OBSESSED!
What are some of your obsessions??
